Ammunition in Dark Souls III consists of Arrows, Bolts, and Greatarrows.
All of the above deal Thrust damage and as such will benefit from the Leo Ring, provided the shots are Counter Attacks. In addition to thrust damage, some types of ammunition will deal other damage types such as Magic or Lightning.
It is wise to keep the ammunition damage type in mind when pairing your weapon with the proper ammunition. For example, a crossbow that deals pure physical damage should be paired with an ammunition type that also deals pure physical damage. This is due to the way that Dark Souls III calculate damage dealt. Stacking one damage type is advantages because the attacks dealt will only have one damage absorption parameter to overcome instead of two.
It is also wise to take into consideration what area you will be utilizing the ammunition. For example, if the player decides to invade the Road of Sacrifices area, it may be advantages to utilize an ammunition type that deals lightning damage, as lightning damage offers a small area of effect when in water.
In order to fire a Ranged weapon, you must first equip the correct type of ammunition in the corresponding slot. The type of ammunition equipped will be seen in the player's quiver or bolt pouch allowing you to easily identify which ammunition type is equipped without having to open the menu screen.
Bows can only utilize Arrows.
